Minimize exposure to skin. DEET is effective and lasts longer if applied to clo
thing. Pregnant women should be especially careful to use DEET on clothing and
not on skin. Repellents are toxic if ingested. Avoid inhaling or ingesting DEE
T and keep repellents away from the eyes. Don’t use repellents on damaged skin
like sunburns or cuts. After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and
water, and wash DEET from the hands before eating. DET will also damage certai
n fabrics (for example, spandex and rayon) and can mar plastics and painted or v
arnished surfaces.
