Slide - Other Control Measures
While there are currently no means of eliminating Ixodes dammini over large area
s, there are a variety of tactics availabe which may reduce your chance of expos
ure to ticks. Mowing the lawn, removing leaf litter accumulations, and clearing
brush should reduce the suitability of the habitat for both the ticks and hosts
. Potential mouse nesting sites such as rock walls and wood piles can be cleane
d up or moved away from the house. These methods for reducing the tick populati
on take about one to two years to be effective, and in the short term, may actua
lly increase the number of hungry ticks on your property.
Several insecticides registered for tick control may be applied to the lawn or w
oodland edges around the home to kill host-seeking ticks. Commercially availabl
e tubes of permethrin-treated cottonballs may be dispersed to kill ticks on whit
e-footed mice. A combination of environmental and personal protection measures
are recommeded to protect yourself against ticks.
