If untreated, Lyme disease can cause illness in other parts of the body. Infect
ion of the nervous system or heart can occur within several weeks after onset of
illness and usually resolves within a few months. About 60% of untreated patie
nts will develop arthritis within a few weeks to two years after the initial ons
et of illness.
It is important to note that some persons who become infected with the spirochet
e may never deveolop symptoms. It is also possible to get Lyme disease more tha
n once.
