WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT of HISTORY
History provides a unique way to study the diversity of human experience across time and to develop skills that enable one to understand the complex ways the past shapes the present and future.  Through our courses and programs, our department seeks not only to train future historians but also to produce thoughtful and well-informed citizens.  Many of our graduates successfully pursue careers in business, public service, museum work, public history, law, and various other professions.  We foster analytical and writing skills that, in combination with a broad perspective on the past, prepare our students to meet the challenges of a complex and changing world and to engage in lifelong learning.

We offer a major and a minor in history, a Master's degree, and a Ph.D. in Medieval European, Early Modern and Modern Europe, United States and Latin American history.  Just click on "Programs" for detailed information.  The department is also home to the Emiliana Pasca Noether Chair in Modern Italian History (held by John Davis) and the UNESCO Chair in Comparative Human Rights (held by Amii Omara-Otunnu).

We also sponsor three lecture series and two annual lectures that bring distinguished scholars to campus throughout the year:

Visiting Scholars in Gender & History
Foreign Policy Seminar
Emiliana Pasca Noether Chair Visiting Speaker Program

Fusco Distinguished Lecture
New England Seminar in American History

A complete listing of all History department colloquia may be found under "Events."  We welcome students and faculty from all fields.
